As a rule of thumb, filter sand should be replaced after about two years, and filter balls after about four years. During this time, filter sand needs to be backwashed regularly for cleaning, which isn't possible with filter balls, as they are quite rigid and cause dirt to become trapped deeper and more firmly attached. Filter balls should be changed or washed at least once per pool season to prevent the pool water from tipping over.
